Arizona is the 48th state admitted into the U.S. and is located in the Southwest of America, sharing a 626km international border with Mexico. Previously a copper mining and cotton farming town, both industries were hit hard during the great depression. However, during the 1920’s and 30’s tourism started to become the important industry that it has become today. Arizona is best known for its ancient desert landscape, which has created a number of natural wonders forming part of the character of the state. It boasts the Barringer Meteorite Crater, a well preserved crater 170m deep as well as the Grand Canyon, a massive gorge carved by the Colorado River. It is classed as one of the seven wonders of the natural world.

This desert climate leads to large temperature swings during day and night, but seasonally, it ranges from as low as 4°C in the winter up to 48°C in the summer.

Its capitol and largest city is Phoenix, with 1 ˝ million people, it forms 33% of the total population of Arizona.

Arizona has an usually high number of UFO sightings with over a thousand sightings on record between 1946 and 2006.
